“SOMETIMES A CIGAR IS JUST A CIGAR”
Sigmund Freud’s famous warning to amateur psychoanalysts not to assume that conscious actions or dream symbols always correlated to subconscious desires is simple, memorable, and witty.
It’s also almost certainly something he never actually said, as historians and biographers have pored over acres of Freud’s written correspondence and essays without ever coming across the saying.
There’s also no equivalent of the phrase in Freud’s native German, suggesting that the apocryphal quote actually originated with an English speaker.
It may even have been a joke at Freud’s expense—supposedly the famous analyst was so addicted to his cigars that he found non-smokers annoying, compelling his closest students and acolytes to take up the habit.Wikimedia Commons 19/09/2013
